Study Overview
Utility Customer Information Systems Are on the Brink of a Major Transformation
Customer Information Systems (CIS) address business-critical utility M2C (meter to cash) and customer care business processes.  The CIS products cover two core utility lifecycle processing areas, revenue management and customer management.  The CIS solutions reach into two additional areas, commodity management and service delivery management.  They go beyond CRM!

The market for utility Customer Information Systems and billing solutions is on the brink of a major transformation as many leading utilities have already started an overhaul of their systems infrastructure.

With the new technologies, the utility consumer has much more information available than ever before, and as a result, the utilities are becoming more consumer centric.

CIS systems have conventionally been provisioned as custom, in-house developed solutions or by system integrators providing a leveraged product approach.  However, that has changed as more and more robust commercial off-the-shelf solutions have become available from suppliers.

Strategic Issues
Historically, the utility industries worked in a one-service-one-bill environment, but with the advent of smart meters and the Smart Grid, along with a propensity to provide better customer service, the utilities are working towards different billing scenarios for the consumer.

  • What strategies are most important?
  • Are different strategies required for different types of for utilities?
  • Will a hosted CIS be accepted by the utilities?
  • What is the impact of demand response and data management?
  • How are the large software companies impacting the total market?
